Originally released in 2010, Dumhi’s “The Jungle” is a hidden gem of underground hip-hop, now reissued for the first time on vinyl and CD. Spearheaded by Philadelphia producer Haj, the album brings together a diverse array of emcees over a cohesive sonic landscape, reminiscent of Pete Rock’s “Soul Survivor and Madlib’s ”Beat Konducta” series. Haj’s production blends Ethiopian jazz and boom-bap drums, providing a unified backdrop for a variety of indie titans.
“The Jungle” is loosely based on the 1967 documentary of the same name. With its raw fusion of documentary and fiction, it shows a unique view into Philly street life through the lens of gang members themselves.
